Social Bookmarking: Another New Internet Marketing Tool

Web 2.0, the ability of the user to contribute content and share information with other users, is adding new methods and strategies to effective internet marketing. Effective internet marketing in this environment is dependent upon having the users get excited about your product or content and want to share it with others. The fastest way this is done is something called social bookmarking.

You know how to add a site to your favorites list, right? You see a site that you like or that you plan to return to so you add it to your favorites list. There is one big drawback to this “old” system of listing your favorite sites. Your favorites list is locked onto your computer. There is no easy way to share your favorites list with your friends and associates.

What if, when you found a site you wanted to add to your favorites, instead of adding them to your favorites on your computer, you could add them to a list of your favorites that is on the internet. Then you could find your favorites no matter what computer you were using and you could direct your friends to your favorites list by sharing the web address with them.

This is in essence what social bookmarking is. Social bookmarking is creating a personalized list of your favorites on an internet site built specifically for this purpose. The site is constructed so that everyone who visits can see your favorites list and can visit the sites that you think are important.

Visitors to your social bookmark list not only can visit your favorite sites, they can add the sites that they like to their own social bookmark list. Then others can view their list and so on and so forth. A really interesting site could start to spread virally on these social bookmarking sites. That would be a tremendous benefit to anyone’s web traffic.

Another function of social bookmarking sites is to keep track of how many times a site is listed on someone’s favorites list. This number is used to rank the sites popularity. Of course the highest ranking sites are featured by the social bookmarking sites and of course that brings even more traffic to those sites.

How do you start getting listed on these social bookmarking sites? First you have to be listed at least once, so logically you set up your own list and put your sites on it. Some sites have buttons you can add to your site to allow readers the option of listing it on their social bookmark list. There are plugins for some blogs that can do this. Obviously the better and more useful your content the more likely your site is going to end up on readers lists.

The object is to get your site listed on as many social bookmark sites and lists as you can. A few popular sites are: del.ico-us, backflip, netvouz, Digg and stumbleupon.

Getting involved in social bookmarking is good internet marketing, taking advantage of the interactivity of Web 2.0. Social bookmarking is one more tool to use to boost your sites popularity and increase traffic.

Social Bookmarking Software Available Online

Most people that have websites know that one of the best ways to market it is by back links and social bookmarking. By definition, social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of meta data. The concept of shared online bookmarks dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList the features of which included public and private bookmarks. Within the next three years, online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, ClickMarks, HotLinks, and others entering the market.

One of the main advantages of SMB is the fact that a lot of these social bookmarking sites have a lot of regular users and traffic which means that information on them tends to get better positioning. Also, links to your own website or blog when posted to a site like MySpace creates back links. Obviously search engines really value links to your site and it’s an indication of the popularity of your site. This also allows you to have a higher PR (page rank).

So how is something like this achieved? Well you could do it manually, one site at a time, over a period of time, but this can be quite time consuming! Another terrific alternative would be to get social bookmarking software which would pretty much automate every aspect. This would not only be easier but also less time consuming. A sort of, set it and forget it deal. This software not only automates social bookmarking but also automates other things such as news postings and video postings. It allows you to have complete control over the entire process without getting “slapped” on the wrist by Google. It does this by setting your back links at a “human” pace which is absolutely essential if you don’t want to raise red flags with Google!

For the amount of back links you would ultimately get with a piece of software like this, the price tag is well worth it. This isn’t saying you are going to have to pay hundreds of dollars for it however. So far, I’ve seen sites offering this software for around $197, which in my opinion is a really nice price for what you get. Remember, you won’t have to sit there for hours on end anymore, and you can simply set it and forget it!

How to Use Social Bookmarking Sites to Your Advantage

I’ve been getting really excited lately about the whole social bookmarking trend in internet marketing. This is because I’m on a traffic kick, testing out new things to bring my website more traffic – something all webmasters want to do.

Social bookmarking is one of the top techniques that you can use to promote your website and build more traffic. If you’re not involved, it’s time to get with the program!

Social bookmarking started for me when I joined a few of the top social bookmarking sites. You may think this is all you need to do to get involved, but trust me – there is more to social bookmarking than simply joining the social bookmarking circles!

The first thing to do is visit a few of the top social bookmarking sites: Digg, del.ici.ous, Furl, and Yahoo, just for example. You can do a Google search for these to find them if you’ve never been there before.

Then, sign up for a free account with each of these. When signing up for an account, you will have the opportunity to select buttons that you can add to the end of each of your blog posts. This will allow readers of your blog to “Digg” your post over at the Digg social bookmarking site.

When someone clicks on your Digg button, it will bring them to the Digg site, where they would login with their account username and password. The blog post or article would then appear as a URL, and the person who clicked “Digg” will have the opportunity to post a comment about your post.

This can do nothing but good things for your website. If everyone gives your post a Digg, think of all the links in Digg you will have pointing back to your site. This will certainly increase your traffic when someone goes onto Digg looking for a post on a topic that interests them.

This is where I initially went wrong in my social bookmarking efforts. You don’t want to stop after just joining these social bookmarking sites and leaving a button on your blog posts for everyone else to find and click. You want to get actively involved in the social bookmarking process by becoming an active member of these sites.

What I mean by being “active” is that you want to visit these sites, and find topics of interest to you, or topics that relate to your online business. Once you find other posts on your topic of interest, then you have the opportunity to bookmark, or “favourite” those posts, and add a comment.

Doing this can really increase your traffic, as evidenced by my own increasing website stats just by doing this one thing alone. If you “favourite” other people’s sites and they “favourite” your site and you each comment on other’s posts, then you will soon have a network of links pointing back to your site.

This important piece of the social bookmarking puzzle is something I didn’t even realize myself until I got involved with my latest social bookmarking site called “Squidoo”. Apparently, Google just loves Squidoo at the moment, so I jumped on the bandwagon along with others I know joining the site.

The great thing about Squidoo and sites like MySpace is that you can create a “lens” which is just like a mini web page, or landing page that gives visitors to that lens a quick overview of what you have to offer. This will hopefully entice them to click your links and bring you more traffic.

I’ve made darn sure this time that after creating my lens I did not just leave it at that. I have visited other lenses on my topic of interest, added those lenses to my “favourites” list, and sent comments to others in hopes that others will visit my links as well. So far, this has increased my traffic very quickly and I may even reach a personal goal thanks to this technique alone!

Next, I am going to try creating more than one lens and link one to the other, which will hopefully entice visitors to read one of my lenses, and then click on to the other, increasing my traffic even more!

The thing to watch out for when using social bookmarking sites is that you don’t want to be a spammer who is out there just to get your links seen and clicked. As with anything in internet marketing, like forum posts, no one likes someone who is just there to advertise themselves. You want to offer valuable information, and make a valuable contribution by offering good advice, and great content.

Targeted List Building With Social Bookmarking and Networking

If you’re looking for a way to get rich from home and you want to run or already run your own Internet business, one of the best tools you can make use of is social bookmarking. Social bookmarking is a method of social networking to increase your flow of targeted traffic to your website(s). It has been made possible by the Internet.

Social networking is nothing new. It is a method of finding more qualified prospects for your business. In the business world before and outside of the Internet, networking involves joining groups such as a local racquetball club or anything that revolves around something that interests you, and then making friends and making yourself and your services known within those groups over time. By interacting in a friendly way with people with mutually shared interests, you build trust and a reputation for expertise in your professional area. As people within the groups become convinced that they might need or want your services, they come to you willingly for help; these same people are also far more likely to give you referrals, which along with repeat sales are the lifeblood of all business owners.

With social bookmarking, you blog or you or write articles and get these articles published at online content sites; then you bookmark your blog entries, articles you write for your website(s), and articles you publish at content sites at bookmarking websites. There is quite an abundance of these and their number continues to grow as their value becomes better known and they come more and more into demand.

The bookmarking websites are places where you share content that you find useful, well-written, or informative. These sites facilitate linking back to the original content and most of them also facilitate commentary. These sites are designed to give people all over the Net access to quality information in a targeted, organized way; consequently they virtually all have categories under which you index your content. You can bookmark any content that you like, but in this case it goes without saying that the content you are bookmarking is your own.

The idea is to create social “buzz” about yourself through your content at these networking bookmark sites and get people to access the links to your content, blogs, and website(s). By indexing your content using placement under appropriate site categories and adding keyword tags, you begin to draw the attention of people who might be interested in your offerings. You can greatly enhance your visibility by taking part in the socializing aspects of these bookmarking sites, by which you make online friends and add and get subscribers to your bookmarks and content. These people don’t buy a subscription, but they do become automatic regular followers of your posts, getting them “hooked” on you and greatly upping the chances that they will eventually become a customer.

Targeted traffic is vastly more valuable than traffic you get from the “shotgun approach”. It is a great waste of time to offer your services to just anybody when you could instead find people who already probably have some degree of interest in what you offer. In business, time is money, and when you waste time you lose money. But by constantly writing on a topic such as “how to get rich working from home” and socially bookmarking and networking with your content online, you become known, trusted, and seen as relevant to a certain group of people.

One of the most effective social bookmarking and networking websites is StumbleUpon. This is both a networking site and a web browser plug-in where you download the StumbleUpon toolbar to your desktop and it becomes part of your web browser. You find different websites when you click the “Stumble!” button on the toolbar. The website chooses which new page to show based on your ratings of previous pages, ratings by your online site friends, and by the ratings of other Internet users who have similar interests using a “thumbs-up/thumbs-down” display system. It also has one-click blogging built into it. The ramifications for your business should be obvious.

Another great site is Yahoo! Answers. Here you create a profile and then answer people’s questions on specific topics. (You can also ask them.) Eventually you can become a Trusted Reporter for frequently sharing valuable answers, which greatly increases your profile at the site. You can post links to your website(s) in your answers and your profile, and post parts from your articles as answers. Yahoo! Answers is more frequently used all the time because people feel they are getting “friendly” and “earthy” advice from people with real experiences, making it a perfect fit for a social networker.

For targeting youthful prospects (teens and adults under 25), the fast-rising BEBO is perfect. BEBO is modeled on and similar to Facebook and early in 2008 was named the top performing Website of its kind in a report published in ‘Computing Which?’. The editor commented, “No matter what age you are or what interests you have, there is a social networking site out there for you.”

Yes, in fact, there is–and you as an Internet marketer want to take advantage of all the opportunities made possible with social bookmarking and networking.

Social Bookmarking Software – Socialbot V 3.0

If you have ever investigated the various means of driving traffic to your website you’ll know that using social bookmarking sites is definitely one of the most effective.  The problem is that it is so very time consuming which was why I was pleased to discover some social bookmarking software – Socialbot version 3.

Social bookmark sites are a step beyond your favourites folder – they are online bookmarks that users can manage easily and more importantly share with other users.   The advantages of having your sites listed in the social bookmarking sites are numerous but they include obtaining backlinks from these bookmark sites to any sites you have listed, exposes these websites to other users of each sites (some of them have millions of users) and just generally just brings in more traffic.

However all this comes at a cost – to manually create accounts and add individual bookmarks to your sites can be extremely time consuming.   This is something you have to regularly put aside days for if you have any number of sites – believe me I’ve done it manually for some time but still think it’s worth the effort.  One of the other benefits to being listed in these bookmarking sites is the speed at which your pages get indexed from them – extremely quickly !

So Socialbot is a software program that runs under windows and automates many of the tasks that are involved in creating links to these bookmarking sites.    Here’s some of it’s features in no particular order -

Website Spidering – point Socialbot at one of your websites and will spider the whole site and list all the urls.  This is extremely useful as you can then simply select which sites to add.

Currently supports over 120 English language Social boookmarking sites

Automatically submits each selected page to any site you select

Allows multiple profiles – this is extremely important as you can submit to multiple accounts on each bookmark site – more links

The software installs very easily and is an attractive well written product.  I first tried spidering one of my main web sites and it scanned and listed the 200 pages very quickly.  There is also a filter setting which will allow to you specify pages to ignore in the spidering process.

You get a long list of web pages listed under each url ready to select and submit. The first thing you must do unfortunately is create user accounts at each of the social bookmarking sites as this is not done automatically.   This is quite time consuming – all the pages are listed and you just click and register at each site but it does take some time to do 120 of them – took me about 2 hours I think.

To be  honest there’s no real way around this – I have used some very expensive software (about $900) which did automate this but it created  random user accounts which mostly ended up getting banned on the bookmark sites.   So you should build in this effort before you use socialbot – however this is a one off job for each profile so it’s not too bad.

After I had registered at all the social bookmarking sites I decided to use the software to start adding my links.   I specifically selected a group of my web pages from the spidered list and then selected all the social bookmarking sites.

Then it was just a matter of pressing the submit button – socialbot then went to each bookmarking site and registered each link.   Even automated it took quite a while but the advantage was I just let it get on with it whilst I did other things.

Socialbot registered my selected web pages and I logged in to a few random sites just to see they were all listed.  It’s a very useful program and well worth the investment I made in the product.   Remember though only add a few pages at a time to these sites – don’t spam them – I will never generally add more than 10 pages a day but I do use Socialbot now pretty much everyday to add mine and my customers pages.

The process definitely boosted my traffic and I’ve started to see quite a lot of visitors from these social bookmarking sites.  One of the most instant benefits I saw was indexing – any page added seem to get indexed almost immediately and my indexed pages under Yahoo and MSN jumped up almost overnight – I have hundreds more pages indexed now.

If you have a site to promote you need Backlinks Software

or a lot of spare time – socialbot is definitely worth considering as an excellent social bookmarking software – it compares favourably to the services which do this manually as you get charged every time.

Social bookmarking Software

All the best

Joe
